⚡ Quick Answer: What Does It Cost and How Long Does Container Shipping to Vietnam Take?
For initial planning, ocean freight may cost approximately $2,800–$4,500 for a 20ft container and $4,200–$6,500 for a 40ft or 40ft High Cube. Port-to-port transit is commonly about 25–45 days, depending on the U.S. gateway, carrier and transshipment. Key gateways include Cat Lai and Cai Mep–Thi Vai in southern Vietnam and Hai Phong/Lach Huyen in the north. These are broad planning figures, not guaranteed rates or schedules.
USA → VIETNAM CONTAINER SHIPPING: SOUTHERN, NORTHERN AND CENTRAL PORT ROUTING
Cat Lai serves the Ho Chi Minh City market, Cai Mep–Thi Vai handles deep-sea services in the south, and Hai Phong/Lach Huyen is the principal northern gateway for Hanoi and nearby industrial provinces. Da Nang may be considered for selected central-Vietnam cargo when a suitable feeder service and inland plan are available. AllTransportDepot coordinates nationwide U.S. pickup, export-warehouse receiving, professional container loading, AES filing, carrier booking and destination-agent handoff for eligible commercial, household, vehicle and machinery cargo.

Container Shipping Services from the USA to Vietnam
A Vietnam shipment must be planned around the actual U.S. origin, commodity, Vietnamese importer, discharge terminal and final delivery province. AllTransportDepot can coordinate door-to-port pickup, supplier collection, export-warehouse receiving, container loading and port-to-port ocean transport. Final delivery is quoted separately after the destination address, customs arrangement, unloading method and empty-container return location are confirmed.
Full Container Load
A dedicated 20ft, 40ft or High Cube container for inventory, factory equipment, household goods, eligible vehicles and mixed declared cargo.
Warehouse Loading
Suitable when freight comes from several suppliers or cannot be loaded safely at the pickup address. We coordinate receiving, positioning, blocking, bracing and sealing.
Industrial and Oversized Cargo
Machinery may be reviewed for standard, open-top or flat-rack equipment after exact transport dimensions, weight, lifting points and securing needs are provided.
Main Container Ports in Vietnam
Cat Lai Terminal — Ho Chi Minh City
Cat Lai is a major southern gateway for containerized cargo serving Ho Chi Minh City and the surrounding manufacturing and consumer market. Because it lies inland on the Saigon River system, the confirmed carrier service and terminal cutoff must be checked for each booking.
Cai Mep–Thi Vai — Ba Ria–Vung Tau
The Cai Mep terminal cluster is the main southern deepwater option and can receive large mother vessels on selected long-haul services. It is often considered for cargo destined for Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and southern industrial zones when its ocean schedule and inland cost are competitive.
Hai Phong / Lach Huyen — Northern Vietnam
Hai Phong is the principal northern port system for Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and nearby production corridors. Lach Huyen’s deepwater terminals expand direct-call capability, but the exact terminal is assigned by the carrier.
Da Nang — Central Vietnam
Da Nang may be used for selected cargo serving Da Nang, Hue, Quang Nam and the central region. Many services connect through a larger Asian transshipment hub, so the total route can differ materially from a southern or northern booking. Terminal availability must be verified operationally before the bill of lading is issued.
Selecting the Vietnamese Port by Final Destination
The nearest port on a map is not always the lowest-cost gateway. Compare the carrier’s actual service, transshipment, terminal handling, customs-agent coverage, road restrictions and empty return before selecting the port.
Southern Vietnam
Cat Lai or Cai Mep–Thi Vai may suit Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Long An, Can Tho and other southern destinations.
Northern Vietnam
Hai Phong/Lach Huyen is generally considered for Hanoi, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Quang Ninh.
Central Vietnam
Da Nang can be reviewed for central provinces, but feeder schedules and inland alternatives should be compared before booking.
Nationwide U.S. Pickup and Professional Loading
Cargo can originate at a residence, business, factory, dealer, auction, farm or storage facility. Send the pickup ZIP code, release contact, cargo-ready date, inventory, dimensions, weights and access details before dispatch. If a container chassis cannot be positioned safely, smaller-vehicle pickup to an assigned export warehouse may be a better solution.
- Supplier and auction release coordination
- Receiving from multiple U.S. origins
- Vehicle and machinery positioning
- Blocking, bracing and weight distribution
- Container seal and cutoff coordination
- AES export filing when required
20ft, 40ft and Special Containers for Vietnam
20ft Standard
Often selected for dense machinery, spare parts, a smaller household move, boxed inventory or eligible vehicle loads. Payload and U.S. road-weight limits still apply.
40ft / High Cube
Provides more volume for furniture, commercial stock and bulky freight. High Cube adds vertical capacity but does not remove weight or road restrictions.
Open-Top / Flat Rack
Used for accepted over-height, over-width or heavy cargo. Exact dimensions, center of gravity, lifting points and a securing plan are needed before approval.
Vietnam Customs Rules for Containers from the USA
The Vietnamese consignee must establish who will act as the licensed importer and who will submit the customs declaration. Commercial entries are normally processed electronically through Vietnam’s customs system using the correct HS code, customs procedure, invoice value, origin and supporting permits. AllTransportDepot manages the U.S. export movement; the Vietnamese importer and its appointed customs broker remain responsible for import eligibility and clearance.
Import duty is commodity-specific. Customs treatment depends on the HS classification, origin, condition, customs value and any applicable preferential or trade-policy measure. Goods of U.S. origin are not automatically duty-free, and imported goods may also attract value-added tax, special consumption tax or environmental taxes where applicable. The importer should calculate the current landed taxes from the official tariff before loading—not from a generic percentage found online.
Vietnam Customs may inspect the declared value, product description, origin evidence, quantities, labels and regulatory approvals. Inconsistent invoices, vague descriptions such as “general merchandise,” or cargo found inside vehicles but absent from the packing list can create delays, reassessment, penalties or seizure.
Ocean-carrier manifest deadlines occur before arrival and sometimes before loading. Provide the consignee’s legal Vietnamese name, tax/import details, accurate package counts, gross weight, marks and plain-language descriptions early enough for documentation review.
Documents to Prepare for Vietnam
Core Shipping and Customs File
- Ocean bill of lading instructions
- Commercial invoice with defensible values
- Detailed packing list with package counts and weights
- Sales contract or purchase evidence when required
- Importer/consignee legal and tax information
- HS codes and country of origin
When Applicable
- Certificate of origin for a claimed tariff treatment
- Import licence or specialized inspection registration
- Product conformity, quarantine or food-safety records
- Original vehicle title and purchase documents
- Dangerous-goods declaration and safety data sheet
- Machinery age, technical and manufacturing records
Names, quantities, weights, values and cargo descriptions should agree across the invoice, packing list, U.S. AES filing and bill of lading. Have the broker review the file before the origin terminal cutoff.
Restricted, Prohibited and Specialized-Control Cargo
Vietnam applies import prohibitions, licensing and specialized inspection requirements to particular products. Used consumer goods, certain used equipment, waste and scrap, chemicals, medicines, food, plants, animal products, telecommunications equipment, cultural products, weapons and other controlled categories require careful pre-shipment review.
Do not assume that used household or commercial articles are admissible merely because they fit in a container. Condition, manufacture date, intended use and importer licence can change the result. The Vietnamese importer should search the official Trade Information Portal and obtain written broker or agency confirmation for controlled goods before pickup.
Wood packaging should meet the applicable international treatment and marking standard. Cargo requiring fumigation, quarantine, conformity inspection or product labelling must be planned before arrival; destination storage can accumulate while approvals are pending.
Vehicles and Used Machinery Imported into Vietnam
Motor Vehicles
Vietnam tightly controls imported vehicles, especially used units. Eligibility can depend on vehicle type, age, technical condition, emissions, steering configuration, importer status and the designated customs/inspection process. Taxes can include import duty, VAT and special consumption tax, followed by registration-related costs. Do not purchase or load a vehicle until a Vietnamese customs broker confirms that the exact VIN and model qualify.
Used Machinery and Production Equipment
Used machinery may be subject to age, technical-standard, safety, environmental and inspection requirements. Send the year of manufacture, manufacturer, model, serial number, operating purpose, technical file and photos for an import review. Shipping approval from the ocean carrier is separate from Vietnam’s permission to import.
Household Goods
Relocation cargo needs a precise itemized inventory and evidence supporting the importer’s status. New goods, multiples suggesting commercial use, food, alcohol, medicines, electronics or restricted used consumer goods must be separated for regulatory review.
Vietnam Container Cost and Transit Planning
The planning ranges above reflect estimated ocean freight and can exclude U.S. pickup, warehouse receiving, loading, chassis, documentation, inspections, customs duty, VAT, destination terminal charges, storage and final delivery. Rates change with equipment supply, sailing capacity, fuel and origin/destination surcharges.
West Coast gateways such as Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma can provide efficient Pacific routings. East and Gulf Coast origins may use Panama, Suez or rail/landbridge connections depending on the carrier. We compare the U.S. inland move and ocean service together because the lowest port-to-port rate may not be the lowest total shipment cost.
Port-to-port transit begins at vessel departure. Add pickup, warehouse receiving, export cutoffs, possible Asian transshipment, customs inspection and final-delivery appointments to estimate the complete timeline.
Official Vietnam Customs and Trade Resources
Use these official sources to verify the rules for the exact commodity and importer:
- General Department of Vietnam Customs
- Vietnam National Trade Information Portal — tariffs, procedures, forms and measures
- Official Port of Hai Phong
- Official Saigon Newport / Cat Lai information
- Official Cai Mep International Terminal
Regulations, tariff rates and port procedures can change. Vietnam Customs and the importer’s authorized broker make the final admissibility and clearance determination.
Frequently Asked Questions About Container Shipping to Vietnam
Which Vietnam port should I use?
Cat Lai or Cai Mep–Thi Vai commonly serves southern Vietnam, Hai Phong/Lach Huyen serves the north, and Da Nang may suit selected central destinations. The best choice depends on the carrier schedule and total inland cost.
Are U.S.-origin goods automatically duty-free in Vietnam?
No. Duty and other taxes depend on the exact HS code, origin, value, condition and applicable Vietnamese measures. The importer or broker should verify the current tariff before loading.
Can I ship a used car to Vietnam?
Only after the exact vehicle’s eligibility is confirmed. Vietnam has strict rules for used vehicles, technical inspection and taxation; ocean-carrier acceptance alone is not import approval.
Can used machinery be shipped to Vietnam?
Potentially, but age, condition, technical standards and specialized inspection rules may apply. Send the manufacture year, serial number and technical documents for pre-shipment review.
What is needed for an accurate quote?
Send the U.S. pickup ZIP code, Vietnamese city/province, cargo inventory, values, dimensions, weights, loading method and requested container size.
