It is  important to note that,  just because your car runs and drives , does not mean it will be accepted or shipped as a running car. In today’s Ro-Ro Tips, we will  highlight the Difference between a Running, Non-Running and Forklift Vehicle . While the port Authority ultimately decide how they will accept a Vehicle at the port. Today we will discuss the  generally accepted standards in most Ports in America.

Running Cars

For your car to be accepted as a running Vehicle. it must be self propelled. Further more it needs to be able to loaded into and out of the vessel without causing strain, harm, or possible danger to port workers or the vessel’s crew. Otherwise, the vehicle is  loaded as either non-running or forklift for an additional fee.

To go as a non runner via Roro

  • The units must have 4 operational tires that roll but cannot run and drive as normal for one reason or another.
  • If a Car runs and drives but has Issues that  could  prevent safe or uninhibited transport from the terminal to the vessel, then a Non Running Fees will be charged .
  • This includes but is not limited to oil leaks, smoking muffler, excessive front-end damage, faulty batter.

Forklift Cars

When the above criteria are not met. The Unit will be deemed Forklift

Forklift charges also apply if the Vehicles

  • Have damaged steering wheel or steering column
  • Axle is damaged
  • Tire is missing or damaged
  • Missing Ignition keys

 Vehicles that otherwise run and drive will be deemed forklift  If any of their conditions present a danger to port workers such as Broken or damaged Drivers door or door handle, bio hazard, broken glass inside the vehicle, broken windshield.

Can you ship a vehicle that doesn’t run  on Roro? Yes , Little things you can do to avoid extra charges 

  • Avoid vehicles with excessive front-end damage. Typically, these vehicles have damaged windshields or primary components (engine, radiator, etc.);
