When shipping vehicles overseas, especially when shipping motor cars, there are two most frequently used options: RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) and Container Shipping.

There are several differences between these two shipping methods. one of the differences that determine the choice between RoRo and Container Shipping is the cost. Most of our clients and customers prefer Roro service because it is cheaper and faster.

What is RoRo vs. container Shipping?

Roll-on roll-off (RORO) and Container are the two primary ship types utilized for car transportation. RORO ships function like huge floating parking lots and are specifically built for carrying cars. Certain RORO boats have movable decks to make room for trucks, cranes, and diggers, among other larger vehicles.

See the Roro Shipping illustration below.

How Containerized Car Shipping Works?

Firstly, whereases Roro Shipments, are collected from anywhere in the US and shipped directly to the Port. Car and goods are loaded in our  Warehouses located in Savannah, Atlanta, Houston, California, and New York For Containers. Secondly, When shipping a car internationally via a container.

Customers can choose to deliver cars and goods personally if you are close enough to any of our facilities. However, We, like other shippers can also coordinate delivery using a domestic transport service.

In either case, The shipper must be in the possession of all vehicles before departure. Depending on the service you choose, there are two different scenarios.

Your car, motorcycle or truck will either be loaded into a sole-use 20ft container or consolidated into a 40ft standard or high cube container with other vehicles bound for the same final destination. However, that also means other vehicles are needed to fill the container before it is ready to sail.

For this reason, it can take longer: so for quicker sailings, you can book your own 20ft. That does mean paying a higher cost. As always, there are tradeoffs.

Comparing RoRo vs Container

  • RoRo: Imagine driving your car onto a giant floating parking lot! With RoRo, you drive your vehicle right onto the ship, where it’s securely fastened to the deck. This method keeps your car protected from the elements.

  • Container Shipping: This method involves placing your car inside a large metal box called a container. Your car might share the container with other vehicles going to the same place, or you can pay extra for a private container.

Vehicle Security:

In RoRo shipping, vehicles are exposed to the elements and are typically secured in an open area within the vessel. This exposes them to potential damage from weather conditions, sea spray, and other external factors during transit.

On the other hand, container shipping offers more protection as vehicles are securely placed inside sealed containers, shielding them from external elements and reducing the risk of damage during transportation.

Cost Breakdown:

The cost of shipping your car will vary depending on the method you select and the distance it must travel. RoRo shipping charges often fall between consolidated and single-container shipping. Expect to pay $700 or more for a tiny automobile through RoRo.

Integrated container shipping is the most affordable alternative because numerous vehicles share the container’s cost. However, single container shipping provides the best security and is the fastest alternative, but it comes at a higher cost.

Packing it Up:

In RoRo No personal belongings are allowed! You’ll need to remove everything from your car, including your spare tyre, before shipping. On the other hand Container Shipping, you can leave some belongings in your car as long as they’re securely fastened. With extra space, you can even pack some household items!

Travel Time:

The shipping method will also affect how long it takes for your car to journey. RoRo shipping normally takes three to four weeks. Integrated container shipping can take much longer, typically 30 to 40 days or more. Single-container shipment is the fastest option, requiring only two to three weeks.
