Running Cars

For your car to be accepted as a running Vehicle. it must be self propelled. Further more it needs to be able to loaded into and out of the vessel without causing strain, harm, or possible danger to port workers or the vessel’s crew. Otherwise, the vehicle is  loaded as either non-running or forklift for an additional fee.

To go as a non runner via Roro

  • The units must have 4 operational tires that roll but cannot run and drive as normal for one reason or another.
  • If a Car runs and drives but has Issues that  could  prevent safe or uninhibited transport from the terminal to the vessel, then a Non Running Fees will be charged .
  • This includes but is not limited to oil leaks, smoking muffler, excessive front-end damage, faulty batter.

Forklift Cars

When the above criteria are not met. The Unit will be deemed Forklift

Forklift charges also apply if the Vehicles

  • Have damaged steering wheel or steering column
  • Axle is damaged
  • Tire is missing or damaged
  • Missing Ignition keys

Vehicles that otherwise run and drive will be deemed forklift  If any of their conditions present a danger to port workers such as Broken or damaged Drivers door or door handle, bio hazard, broken glass inside the vehicle, broken windshield.

How to Prepare Your Non-Running Car for Shipment

When shipping a non-running car, using enclosed transport is often the best choice, especially for rare, classic, or valuable vehicles. Even if your car is in poor condition and you plan to restore it, enclosed transport offers essential protection from the elements and ensures safety for both your vehicle and other travelers on the road.

Enclosed Shipping

Enclosed transport begins by loading your car onto a closed carrier, usually using a liftgate. The carrier will assess the correct lift size and torque needed to safely lift the vehicle, ensuring smooth and controlled movement. Liftgates are particularly important for low-clearance vehicles, as they prevent damage to the car’s undercarriage and chassis during loading. Unlike open transport, enclosed shipping offers full protection from road debris, weather, and environmental hazards, making it ideal for classic or high-value cars.

Open Transport

Open transport involves shipping your car on an uncovered flatbed or “low boy” trailer. The car is typically loaded onto the trailer using a winch, which may be manual (hand-cranked) or electric. The vehicle is pulled onto the carrier by an attached chain. While this option is more economical, the car is exposed to the elements, including weather conditions and road debris, during transit. Open transport is best suited for vehicles that are not as sensitive to weather or environmental exposure.

When preparing your non-running car for shipment, it’s important to consider these options and choose the one that provides the right level of protection and meets your specific needs.

Factors That Affect Non-Operational Vehicle Transport

Transporting a non-operational vehicle involves unique challenges and considerations. Here are the key factors that can impact the process and costs:

1. Type of Car

The size, type, and condition of the vehicle play a significant role in transport logistics.

  • Larger Vehicles: These take up more space and may require adjustments to the carrier’s capacity.
  • Classic and Luxury Cars: These often need special care, such as enclosed transport or additional safety measures.
  • Custom Features: Modifications or unique vehicle characteristics may complicate loading or storage.

Transport companies allocate specific space for vehicles, so oversized cars or unusual dimensions can impact the carrier’s configuration and overall efficiency.

2. Vehicle Damage

The extent and type of damage to the vehicle determine how it will be loaded and transported.

  • Engine Issues: May prevent the car from starting but still allow steering.
  • Front-End Damage: Could hinder turning but not movement.
  • Missing Components: A car without axles or other critical parts might require specialized equipment, such as a flatbed or crane.

Be sure to inform the transport company about any specific limitations or damages to avoid delays during loading. Changes to the vehicle’s dimensions, such as reduced ground clearance or widened bodywork due to an accident, should also be disclosed. Additionally, loose parts, leaks, or other issues that could affect other vehicles in transit must be addressed.

3. Distance

Longer shipping distances increase costs due to fuel consumption, driver needs, and wear on equipment. Greater distances also require additional planning and time, which can impact pricing.

4. Destination and Route

The final destination and route can significantly influence the complexity of transport.

  • Challenging Routes: Low-clearance bridges, narrow or poorly maintained roads, and rural destinations may pose difficulties.
  • Route Adjustments: Detours or extra planning may be required to accommodate these obstacles.

Shipping to less accessible locations may involve longer transit times and additional fees.

5. Shipping Method

The method of transport affects both the cost and the level of protection for your vehicle.

  • Open Transport: Exposes the vehicle to weather, road debris, and potential damage from external elements.
  • Enclosed Transport: Provides maximum protection, shielding the car from environmental factors and ensuring privacy.

For vehicles with high monetary or sentimental value, enclosed shipping may be the best option.

Additional Considerations

Non-operational vehicles often require specialized equipment like hydraulic lifts, winches, or flatbed carriers. When selecting a transport company, ensure they have the proper tools and trained staff to handle your vehicle safely and efficiently.

While cost is a factor, the expertise and reliability of the shipping provider are equally important in ensuring a smooth and secure transport experience.
